Diesel Heater Update 1
Hey everyone! I just wanted to let you know I have updated my Diesel Heater project for my capstone project. Take a look at Part 1 - Planning if you want to learn more about how I have wired my heater and some of the choices I have made. I think the big one is using Milwaukee batteries over a traditional lead acid or lithium ion type 27 battery. I did this not only for redundancy, but also for the ability to hot swap batteries. I probably have close to 100ah worth of Milwaukee batteries, so being able to swap them quickly between the drill running the auger and drilling in the tent stakes to a fan inside the tent, to a lantern to the heater makes sense to me. I will have plenty of batteries on the ice already, so being able to swap out an almost dead battery from the heater and switching it with the lantern or fan could extend the life of the heater drastically. I have yet to complete the heater, but when I do I will do some testing with my multimeter to determine how many hours I can run the heater per amp hour. As a quick example, if the heater were to run at full power 12V, 40W the entire time, my 24ah setup will last about 7.3 hours. The heater does not do that as most of the energy is used when warming the glow plug, however, I believe as of now that the heater should run for more than 24 hours on 24ah of battery power. I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated!
